Know how vs. know when

December 9, 2011

Jakob Nielsen on Kindle Fire usability:

For 7-inch tablets to succeed, service and content providers must design specifically for these devices. Repurposed designs from print, mobile phones, 10-inch tablets, or desktop PCs will fail, because they offer a terrible user experience. A 7-inch tablet is a sufficiently different form factor that it must be treated as a new platform.

It’s pretty obvious Amazon rushed Kindle Fire, they just used whatever available at that time like Gingerbread which is not built for tablet, and the hardware that is identical to PlayBook’s. As Nielsen also noted in his findings; Amazon know how to design a tablet, they just don’t know when to get it right.
