The weakest link

Waze CEO Noam Bardin on iOS 6 new Maps app:

“They (Apple and TomTom) are now coming out with the lowest, weakest data set and they’re competing against Google, which has the highest data set. What’s going to happen with the Apple Maps, is that you’re literally not going to find things. When you do find them, they might be in the wrong place or position geographically. And if you do have it, the route to it may not be the optimal route.”

True. But that’s why Apple is Apple, they will not settle for the shortest route (by keep licensing the map data from Google) but instead they will start from scratch if necessary to prove they can do it, and better.

This shows how versatile Apple is, even though they are now the most valuable tech company out there, they’re still willing to take certain high risks to disrupt the market once again. In a sense, by partnering with TomTom, Apple has become an underdog in map competition. I like that because that’s good for Apple and TomTom, and for us the consumers. First they’ll both benefit from this partnership, secondly we will too because they’ll become a worthy rival against Google maps to balance the market.
