Ballmer’s curse

September 1, 2013

Horace Dediu got an interesting theory regarding Steve Ballmer:

If anything, Steve Ballmer avoided The Innovator’s Curse. Being successful with new market innovations would probably have led to an even shorter tenure. Destroying prematurely the pipeline of Windows in favor for a profit-free mobile future would have been a fireable offense.

I don’t think that’s the case in point, for an instance: Apple didn’t and wouldn’t kill its Mac OS X in order for iOS to grow, first of all it’s a very strong and still growing desktop OS, second Apple is transforming it to be more like iOS. Unlike Microsoft, under Ballmer reign, is trying it the other way around: trying to change mobile OS to be more like its desktop OS; the Windows. That’s where Ballmer failed, in overall Microsoft failed because of him.
